Will My Doctor Accept My New Health Insurance?

You found a health insurance plan with a monthly payment you can live with. Then comes the question that matters just as much: will my doctor accept my new health insurance? Before you enroll, check the exact plan—not just the company name on the card.

This guide is for Texans comparing individual or family health insurance. Use it when shopping for a new plan, renewing coverage, or checking a doctor before an appointment.

“We accept that insurance” is a starting point

A provider network is the group of providers and facilities contracted with your insurer or plan. Hearing a familiar insurance company’s name does not answer every question about your particular coverage. Ask about the full plan name, its network, the doctor’s location, and the year your coverage will begin.

For example, imagine you are choosing coverage for January and your doctor’s office says, “Yes, we take that company.” Your next question should be: “Can you confirm this specific individual Marketplace plan for next year at the location where I see my doctor?”

Check your doctor before choosing the plan

  1. Write down the exact plan. Save its full name, plan ID if available, network name, and coverage year. Keep that information beside you during calls.
  2. Search the insurer’s provider directory. Select the specific plan or network. Match your doctor’s full name and office address. HealthCare.gov also recommends confirming providers with the insurer and the doctor’s office.
  3. Check everyone you want to keep. Make a short list of your primary care doctor, specialists, preferred hospital, and frequently used facilities. Verify each separately.
  4. Ask about appointments. If you need a new doctor, ask whether the office is accepting new patients under that plan and when an appointment is available.
  5. Keep a record. Note the date, representative’s name, and any confirmation number. Save the directory result and any written response for your records.

A short script for the phone call

“I’m considering [full plan name and plan ID] for [coverage year]. Is Dr. [name] at [office address] in network for this exact plan? I’m checking individual or family coverage. Can you confirm the network name and whether the doctor is accepting patients with this plan?”

When calling the insurer, add: “Where can I get that confirmation in writing?” When calling the office, ask for the staff member who handles insurance verification if the first person is unsure.

What if the directory and the office disagree?

Treat the answer as unresolved. Share the exact plan details and office address with both sides, explain the conflicting information, and ask them to verify again. Do not turn an uncertain answer into a promise that the visit will be covered.

Also ask about the care you expect to receive. Network participation alone does not tell you your copay, deductible, or whether a referral or prior authorization is needed. Our guide to copays, deductibles, and coinsurance explains those cost terms.

What if your doctor is outside the network?

Before enrolling, compare another available plan that includes your doctor, or consider an in-network provider with the plan you prefer. Check the actual plan terms before assuming you can simply pay a little more to stay with your current doctor.

HMOs generally do not cover out-of-network care except emergencies; EPOs also generally require network providers except in emergencies. PPOs allow out-of-network care at additional cost. Available options vary by area. See our HMO vs. PPO comparison for the broader differences.
