Working with a health insurance agent can help you understand a Marketplace application and compare coverage for your household. Here is what to expect when giving permission for assistance, reviewing your information, comparing costs, and completing enrollment.
Looking for enrollment dates or deadlines? Visit our Texas Open Enrollment dates, deadlines, and enrollment help page. This guide focuses on working with an agent during the application process.
Coverage requires your first premium payment. Pay your insurer by its deadline. See HealthCare.gov’s dates and payment requirements. Check again before enrolling for updates.
Confirm permission and complete verification
Do not assume verification requirements are suspended. In its September 22, 2026 Marketplace update, CMS describes verification of Social Security or immigration document numbers on agent-assisted applications for applicants other than newborns. CMS also identifies electronic consumer authorization as an upcoming step before Open Enrollment; that announcement does not give a launch date. Follow the current application instructions and be ready to confirm permission for an agent to help.
Review your application and compare total costs
Your eligibility for premium tax credits depends on household details, including estimated income and household size. Complete the application to find out what savings you qualify for, and report changes during the year. Review HealthCare.gov’s premium tax credit guidance before relying on an old quote.
Compare the monthly premium alongside the deductible, copayments, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum. Check each plan’s provider network and prescription coverage. A lower monthly bill does not necessarily mean lower costs when you use care. We cannot promise your 2027 premium based on what you paid in a previous year.
Information to review with your agent
Gather your current coverage details, a list of doctors and medications, and your best estimate of next year’s household income. HealthCare.gov explains which income to include. Note any expected changes in work, dependents, or access to employer coverage so your application reflects your situation.
If you need coverage outside Open Enrollment, check whether you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Eligibility and documentation depend on your circumstances; a life change does not automatically guarantee enrollment.
